Hayden Panettiere

Hayden made a splash Sunday at a downtown Washington, D.C., demonstration that called for a stop to whale hunting.

Hayden, speaking without notes, told the crowd, “Not only are these animals being cruelly slaughtered, the meat is contaminated by huge levels of mercury,” reports The Washington Post’s Reliable Source column.

Continued Panettiere at the rally: “And we’re not taking a stand because Japan is one of our biggest allies in the war on terror, but Australia is an ally and they’ve told Japan what they think, and good on them!”

Panettiere told People magazine she’s a “huge animal lover. I don’t trust people who don’t love animals. I’ve got two dogs at home, Penny Lane and Madison. They’re both rescue [dogs], so they’re mutts. And I have a cat, Raleigh. I pulled him out from behind the dryer when I was 12. He had his foot stuck in a pipe and I pulled him out.”

Hayden and her younger brother Jansen were seen late on Friday night leaving Flames International restaurant. They’re so cute, they seem really close.

Last night Hayden walked the, very appropriate, blue carpet at the Pepsi STUFF Launch Party. Hayden looked very pretty in a black strapless little number.

She sure loves playing a cheerleader! Hayden, 18, and Night at the Museum and Harry Potter producer-director Chris Columbus are in talks about her starring in I Love You, Beth Cooper, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Panettiere’s role: The hot cheerleader Beth, to whom her high school’s dorky valedictorian professes his love in his graduation speech. The script is by Larry Doyle, a former writer for The Simpsons who is now with The New Yorker magazine.

Hayden can be seen later this year in the drama Fireflies in the Garden.
